The Department of Oriental Languages

  • About the Department:

The department of Oriental Languages is divided into two branches or specializations:the first of which is a branch that focuses on the study of the language and literature of Islamic nations, namely, Persian, Turkish, and Urdu. The study of the Persian language counts as the main language of the major and is investigated through its grammar, literature, history, culture, and arts. Another language is also chosen as a minor. Students can choose between Urdu and Turkish as a second language. The second branch focuses on the study of Semitic Languages which include Hebrew, Syriac, and Abyssinian. Hebrew is the main language and is thoroughly studied through all its stages and literature of each era, while Syriac and Abyssinian serve as helping second languages.

  • Date of Establishment:

The department of Oriental Languages was established on September 1997, the same month when the first lectures were given.

  • The Department's Objectives:

The department's objective is to provide the students with the opportunity to learn about the languages of different regions, whether it is the Middle East, Central or East Asia, through its literature and historical influences. In addition to that, reflecting on the linguistic and literary relations between Islamic Nations, as well as exploring the Semitic languages, their stages of development, and their similarities to Arabic.

  • The Department's Vision:

To establish and to improve scientific research and heighten the student's knowledge of Islamic and Semitic nations- which may be different or distant from our culture- through their languages, literature, and civilizations. Such knowledge will widen their scopes and raise their critical awareness.

  • The Department's Mission:
  • To provide students with the needed qualifications to achieve success and master desired skills.
  • To suitably prepare them for the job market.
  • To develop their comprehensive, analytical, critical thinking, speaking and translation skills.
  • Publishing specialized research related to the studied languages and their speakers in various fields whether it is literary, historical, social, or religious.
