- About the department:
The English department is one of great significance for its abilities to prepare students/graduates who can interact with all that is new, and meet the requirements of the age.Accordingly, the department's vision is established upon two main focuses:
- A thorough study of the English Language with special attention directed to all its linguistic sciences such as grammar, phonetics, morphology, semantics, and pragmatics. Moreover, great interest, time, and effort are dedicated to the teaching of the history of the language, its different dialects, as well as its social aspects.
- Interest in different branches of English literature such as: poetry, drama, novel, comparative and American literature.
The widespread belief that the English language is a universal one makes the teaching/ learning process of all its linguistic aspects very crucial to our day and time. Speaking in fluent and effective English is a determinative skill that every student/graduate must have. It will help students to better adapt to this modern age of technological communication and globalization. In addition to that, a study of the integrated background of English literature gives the students a taste of the wonder that is literature and enhances their literary comparative skills. This academic interaction enables students to perceive and respect the differences between cultures and broadens their horizons in dealing with others.
The fact is the English Department is a key pillar in the Faculty of Arts for enabling the student's success both academically and later on in the job market. By developing the four main skills of learning any language: reading, writing, listening, and speaking,more channels of communication are open. The students/graduates become in possession of a very effective tool that contributes to the progress and advancement of society.
- The Department's Objectives:
- To prefect the student's knowledge of the English language in terms of vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure.
- Proficiency of pronunciation through the studying of phonetics and speech sounds while differentiating between the utterances in Arabic, English, and other languages.
- A thorough study of the different English dialects and the linguistic theories regarding stylistics.
- Knowing how to interpret literature through linguistic studies which is considered a modern method of learning.
- Acquiring a familiarity with all aspects of English civilization and how it influences cultural progress.
- Obtaining knowledge in all forms of literature and how they influence our lives through influential writers. A key pillar of English Literature is William Shakespeare to whom the department gives great honor and attention.
- Forming a well-shaped perspective about the similarities and differences between English literature and world literature written in English such as American and Russian literature.
- Fluency of language to the degree that allows students to adapt to the side effects of globalization and deal with the modern methods of technology.
- The Department's Mission:
The department's mission and responsibility lies in the teaching of the scientific content and academic material concerning the linguistic and literary university courses that ensure the production of students and graduates who excel in all fields. The department is committed to training students to learn the skills of listening and speaking the language to increase the student's language fluency. It also works on developing the skills of literary criticism and analysis which heightens the student's achievements and success in his academic life as well as his/her compatibility with the age's requirements.
