About the Department:
The Department of Documents and Libraries is considered one of the most important Departments in the Faculties of Arts within all the Egyptian Universities. It is the newest Department in the Faculty of Arts, Mansoura University, in which study started in the academic year 2004/2005, and the first batch was graduated in the academic year 2007/2008 in order to meet the needs of the libraries in Al-Daqahlya governorate and the nearby governorates. The study in the department varies between the disciplines of documents, libraries and information in an integrative manner to graduate a student capable of dealing with the modern techniques and mechanismsused in the age of information and technology; in order to access the sources of information necessary to achieve human development.

The Objectives:

Providing high quality bachelor’s degree courses that lead to an educational outcome compatible with the needs of the labor market.

Providing postgraduate courses that contribute to the research cognitive balance, and qualify researchers for a high level of practical, professional and ethical respects.

Providing consultancy services to the institutions in Al-Daqahlia governorate.

Preparing successive generations of faculty staff members capable of developing themselves continuously and delivering an outstanding university performance.
The Scientific Content:
The students study Documentation, Libraries and Information Sciences, Public References, and Statistics, and learn about the origin and history of the Arabic Archive and Manuscripts, as well as the science of the Arabic Papyrus. They also study the Science of Arabic Writing, the categories of Audiovisual Materials, and the terminologies of each category. The students also learn how to control the secondary sources of information in its electronic and traditional forms, and learn about the fundamentals of modern publication industry, its structure, characteristics and trends. The Students study information and libraries’ networks and the theoretical and scientific foundations of intellectual production research services available in the sources of electronic information sources through networks or CDS. The study in the department also deals with the laws and legislations that governs the flow of information, the origin and development of the internet, and the possibilities available through the network such as E-mail services, interest groups, and file transfer,… etc. The study in the department also deals with how to market information services and how to use the computer in the fields of archive and documentation. The students also learns about the systems and institutions that issued the public and private Arabic documents in various eras, the rules of indexing the different types of documents, the abstraction and indexing, administrative information systems, analyzing and designing systems, as well as the systems of managing databases, its development and how to plan to design it both in logical and materialistic terms. The students also become fully acquainted with English, Arabic and Turkish Language in addition to field assignments in one of the libraries.
